Stepping Stone is an alcohol and drug treatment program that is open to any female age 18 or older who has an admitted alcohol problem or wishes to stop drinking, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, ethnic background, nationality, or sexual orientation. The program is specifically designed for working women, and residents spend at least 32 hours per week in work, volunteer, or educational activities.
Stepping Stone does not have space for children. Women with children need to make other arrangements for their children’s care while they are at Stepping Stone. Visits with children are arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Admission is by interview only. All applicants must be alcohol and drug-free at for least 72 hours before their initial interview with the Director. This policy may be waived only at the discretion of the Director. Some drugs stay in the system beyond 72 hours. A clean UA is required before admission to the Program.
Stepping Stone is licensed and certified by the State of California Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs as a Comprehensive Social Model. (License # 380032AN)

A $500 non-refundable admission fee is required prior to admission. This fee covers administrative costs and first week; it also covers the last week’s fees, provided a 30 day notice is given.
Monthly fees start at $795 ($990 for a 5-week month). To accommodate residents’ needs, residents may elect to pay weekly for the first two months. Fees range from $195 to $215 per week. Fees are charged in advance and must be paid by 9:00 a.m. Monday of each week. Monthly fees cover room and board, as well as individual and group counseling, Relapse Prevention and Anger Management classes and other programs. This fee includes a $15 per month drug and alcohol testing fee. Fees can be paid in cash or by check or money order (made payable to Stepping Stone). Credit cards are accepted with a 3% service fee.
FACILITIES
Stepping Stone is located in a lovely old Queen Anne Victorian home in the Richmond district of San Francisco. The home accommodates 13 women. New residents share a bedroom with one other woman. There are two single rooms available for women who earn this privilege through successful progress in the program; the rate for these rooms is slightly higher than for double rooms.
The home has a large living room, a community dining room, a well-stocked kitchen, a lovely front porch, and a secluded back yard. Golden Gate Park is within easy walking distance. Residents also have access to a shared desktop computer (PC) with a DSL internet connection. An 18-year old dog named Crosby brings an added homey touch.
MEALS
Balanced and nutritious hot dinners are prepared and served four nights per week. The kitchen is fully stocked and is available for residents’ use in preparing other meals. Residents can prepare their own breakfast, pack a lunch each day, and cook the remainder of their evening and weekend meals in the house kitchen.
THE PROGRAM
Stepping Stone is grounded in the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Residents are required to participate in regular AA meetings (both in-house and outside) and to work with an AA sponsor. In addition, the in-house treatment program combines individual and group elements, including an individual treatment plan, Relapse Prevention and Anger Management classes, group counseling, and peer support sessions. The Program is held Monday through Thursday evenings from 6pm - 9pm,.
LENGTH OF STAY
Upon acceptance to the program, residents agree to stay a minimum of six months, but are urged to consider a one-year to 18-month commitment.
WHAT TO BRING
Although space is limited, Stepping Stone wants each woman to feel comfortable. Residents may bring personal mementos, pictures, reading material, work clothes, and comfy lounging clothes. Residents supply their own personal hygiene products and clothes hangers. Linens are provided by Stepping Stone.

Help Charles "Cook Up Something" for Stepping Stone. HE DID IT!
The Diablo 50 mile run was this past Saturday. Even after doing Ironman Triathlons I never experienced a day like this one! It was 92 degrees out there. I managed to run almost 40 miles but could not run fast enough to make the cutoff time to complete the race in under 16 hours. It seemed like this race was all uphill and most of it was! I suffered dehydration and cramps. It was the most physically challenging event of my life.
This is known as the toughest ultramarathon in California and I can see why. I'm told that it is the equivalent of running a 100 mile race on level ground.
I was humbled by this experience and very grateful to be in one piece when I finished.
Right now I can't imagine ever doing another 50 mile race, but that could change. If it does, I would certainly try to raise funds for such a wonderful place as Stepping Stone.
Thanks for letting me use this event for the eventual purchase of a stove/oven. I hope we were able to make a dent in the amount needed for this purchase.
Gratefully yours,
Charles CHARLES HAS ALREADY RAISED $1,925 of his $5,000 goal!
